While there are many good chat programs out there, my personal favorite is mIRC.

I started chatting in late 1996. I had my computer for about a year before that. I had used my computer for my businesses and of course, for playing games, but I had never been interested in going on the internet until that time. To make a long story short......I LOVED IT! I started out on Dalnet and cruised on to Undernet. There I happened on a channel called #new2mIRC. It was a very helpful channel and they taught me the mIRC program as well as some things about my computer. Within 3 months I was asked to be an OP. An honor that I was very happy to accept. Since that time I have op-ed on about 8 other channels. Several
people in that time have decided to register their own channels.
Myself
and Charlie_D being among them. Some folks form a channel for
help
with specific things. Others form a
channel
for help in general. And still others form a channel for the pure
enjoyment
of chatting. Charlie_D and I wanted a chat channel. We set up the
rules for our channel and registered it. To our great pleasure we
were given X in October of 1998. Of all the channels that are formed
some survived and others fell by the wayside. But it is all great
fun while it lasts.

Here
is a list of some of the channels that have spawned and continued to
Check
out some of these channels. Of course, Charlie and I would love to
see you on #irc-junkies. But we strongly promote chatting on any
of the channels that I've mentioned. All of them being good clean
family channels.
